What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Emperor Menelik II made the green-yellow-red tricolor official in 1897, the year after his army crushed Italy at the Battle of Adwa. Because Ethiopia stood as Africa's great uncolonised nation, newly independent states across the continent borrowed its colors, which became known as the pan-African colors. The blue disc and interlaced star were added in 1996 under the federal republic.
