What the Colors Mean
Flag History
This is essentially the flag of the PAIGC, the liberation party founded by Amilcar Cabral that fought Portugal for over a decade and unilaterally declared independence in September 1973. Its layout and black star are borrowed from Ghana's flag, whose pan-Africanism inspired Cabral's movement. Cabral himself was assassinated eight months before the declaration he had worked towards.
