OrangeThe northern savannah and the nation's dynamic growth
WhitePeace and unity
GreenThe southern coastal forests and hope for the future

Flag History

Adopted: 1959

Adopted in December 1959, months before independence, with the vertical layout of the French tricolor as a deliberate nod to the departing colonial power. The bands read like the country itself: orange savannah in the north, green forest along the coast, peace between them. Unlike most of its neighbours, Ivory Coast declined the pan-African colors.

โœจ Did you know?

Flip it horizontally and you have Ireland's flag โ€” only the proportions give them away, since Ivory Coast flies 2:3 and Ireland 1:2.
