Flag History

Adopted: 1962 (at independence from France)

The design was flown by Algerian nationalists decades before independence; a popular account credits Emilie Busquant, the French wife of independence leader Messali Hadj, with sewing the first version in 1934. The FLN used it during the war against France, and the new republic made it official in July 1962.

โœจ Did you know?

The horns of Algeria's crescent are longer and more closed than on any other national flag โ€” Algerians traditionally consider the extended crescent a bringer of good fortune.
