Designed by Louis Thomasi, an accountant, and first raised at independence on 18 February 1965. It is one of the few African flags with no political symbolism at all: it simply pictures the River Gambia flowing blue between the red sun above and the green land below. It has flown unchanged through the 1970 republic and the Senegambia confederation of the 1980s.
