Flag History

Adopted: 1962

Designed by Justice Minister Grace Ibingira after Milton Obote's UPC won the 1962 pre-independence elections, replacing a green-and-blue design proposed by the outgoing government. The black-yellow-red stripes come straight from the UPC party flag, while the grey crowned crane was already Uganda's badge under British colonial rule.

โœจ Did you know?

The crowned crane at the centre stands with one leg raised โ€” official symbolism for a nation on the move, not standing still.
