Commissioned by Hussein Bey II after Tunisia's fleet was destroyed alongside the Ottomans' at the Battle of Navarino in 1827, so Tunisian ships could be distinguished at sea; it was in use by 1831. It then survived 75 years of French protectorate rule unchanged and was confirmed as the national flag at independence in 1956.
