Flag History

Adopted: 1960

Created by Paul Ahyi, one of Africa's most celebrated artists, for independence from France on 27 April 1960. Its five alternating green and yellow stripes stand for Togo's five regions, rendered in pan-African colours with a lone white star on the red canton.

Togo's flag is the only national flag proportioned on the golden ratio โ€” designer Paul Ahyi set its dimensions at 1:1.618, the 'divine proportion' of mathematics and art.
