Flag History

Adopted: 1964 (green shade brightened in 1996)

Created for independence in October 1964 by Gabriel Ellison, the government artist who also designed Zambia's coat of arms and decades of its postage stamps. The soaring African fish eagle, borrowed from the coat of arms, represents the people's ability to rise above the nation's problems.

โœจ Did you know?

Almost every flag anchors its design at the hoist or centre โ€” Zambia pushes its entire eagle-and-stripes block into the outer fly corner, one of the only national flags to do so.
