Flag History
The seven stripes come from the party flag of ZANU-PF, which won the 1980 elections that ended white-minority Rhodesia; a white triangle for peace and a red star for the revolution's aspirations were added at the hoist. On the star sits the Zimbabwe Bird, an emblem that had also appeared on colonial Rhodesian flags.

The bird on the flag is a real object โ one of eight centuries-old soapstone carvings excavated from the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, the medieval stone city the country is named after.
