Flag History

Adopted: 1979 (independence)

The design reproduces the coat of arms granted to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony in 1937, based on work by colonial administrator and writer Sir Arthur Grimble. Kiribati kept it, stretched across the whole field, when it became independent on 12 July 1979.
