Flag History

Adopted: 1971 (four years before independence)

In 1970 the Australian administration proposed a blue, yellow and green tricolour, which Papua New Guineans widely rejected. A nationwide competition instead produced the design of Susan Karike, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Yule Island, who split the field diagonally and paired the bird-of-paradise with the Southern Cross. It was adopted on 1 July 1971, four years before independence from Australia.
