First hoisted on 26 May 1948 while Samoa was a New Zealand-administered trust territory, originally with a four-star Southern Cross; a smaller fifth star was added in February 1949. When Samoa became the first small Pacific island state to regain independence, on 1 January 1962, it kept the flag unchanged.
