A national design competition produced successive winning entries that were all rejected — one for representing only a single region — before this design was approved and first raised on 18 November 1977, eight months ahead of independence from Britain. The thin yellow diagonal was kept deliberately narrow so the sun would divide, not dominate, the sea and the land.
