What the Colors Mean
Flag History
King George Tupou I, the Christian convert who unified Tonga, developed the flag in the 1860s with missionary adviser Shirley Baker. Their first version โ a red cross on a white field โ proved almost identical to the newly agreed Red Cross emblem, so the cross was moved into a white canton on a red field. The design was written into the 1875 constitution.
โจ Did you know?
Tonga's constitution declares the flag may never be altered, making the 1875 design legally permanent โ one of the oldest unchanged national flags in the world.
