What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Adopted at independence on 1 October 1978, replacing the flag of the former Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony while keeping the Union Jack. In 1995 Prime Minister Kamuta Latasi introduced a new flag without the Union Jack and with eight stars, but the change proved unpopular and the original nine-star design was restored in April 1997.
โจ Did you know?
The nine stars are a map: they sit as the islands actually lie in the ocean, with east at the top โ one star more than the country's name admits, since 'Tuvalu' means 'eight standing together', the ninth island of Niulakita being historically uninhabited.
