What the Colors Mean
Flag History
Based on the flag of the Vanua'aku Pati, the party that led the New Hebrides to independence from joint British-French rule. Local artist Kalontas Malon's party design was adapted by a parliamentary committee and adopted on 18 February 1980, five months before independence. The black triangle carries a boar's tusk encircling two crossed namele fern fronds, symbols of prosperity and peace.
โจ Did you know?
The curved boar's tusk on the flag depicts real wealth: in Vanuatu, pig tusks grown into a full circle have long served as traditional currency and are still used in ceremonial exchange and bride price.
