Flag History
Chosen through a 1970 national competition, with the winning design credited to Suva art teacher Tessa Mackenzie, and hoisted at independence on 10 October 1970. It keeps the Union Jack and the shield of Fiji's colonial coat of arms, unusual for a Pacific republic.

In 2015 Fiji's government ran a contest to replace the flag and drop the Union Jack, drawing over 2,000 entries — but scrapped the plan in 2016, just as the old flag flew over Fiji's first-ever Olympic gold in rugby sevens.
